Once you’ve decided to take the plunge and step up from cable TV or rabbit ears to all digital satellite TV, which of the two major providers should you go with? Which offers the best value for your money?Depending on where you live and what cable company serves your area, you will pay about $40 per month for basic cable service (about 64 channels), plus $5 per month to get digital programming instead of analogue. You’ll also pay a monthly fee for each additional “box” you need to service more than one television in your home. And finally, there will also be an installation charge.

When I finally left cable for digital satellite TV, I was paying nearly $70 per month for 64 channels of basic analogue service to 3 televisions. Now I pay Dish Network only $51 per month for more than 210 all-digital channels, including locals and 60 channels of SIRIUS radio.

If instead, I had chosen to go with DirecTV, I could have opted for their “Choice XTRA” package, offering more than 200 channels of all digital programming for the same $50 per month that I was paying cable for 64 channels.

With either DirecTV or Dish Network you receive free equipment and free professional installation for up to 4 rooms. This includes the satellite dish necessary to bring in the signal, and the receivers for each room that connect to your television.

With Dish Network you can get a free dual-room DVR receiver that lets you watch two separate TV programs in two separate rooms while recording each program separately. You can also get a free Dish TV High Definition receiver.

With DirecTV you receive DVR and HD upgrades free after the use of a $100 instant rebate and the commitment to a certain level of service. The DVR receiver likewise allows you to watch two separate programs in two separate rooms while recording each program separately.

So both Dish Network and DirecTV operate on the same basic business model. They give away the equipment and the installation so they can make money selling the programming packages, in much the same way as when Gillette used to give away the razor in order to sell the blades.

Dish Network and DirecTV equipment and installation are both excellent and there is very little difference between them in the way of quality, reliability, and ease of service.

Due to the fact that details of special offers by both providers are constantly changing, you should check the links at the end of this article for current information about Dish Network offers and DirecTV offers. You will be able to see exactly which channels you can get for a particular price, including local channels for your area, and learn more about your DVR and HD options if these are important to you

Do you want to know how you can watch cable TV on laptop computer with Satellite TV for PC? This was exactly what I had been looking to do before, and I scoured the internet for the best and most affordable ways to do so. Finally, I arrived at 2 of the best and most convenient methods that are further discussed below.

Which Are The 2 Best Ways to Watch Cable TV on Laptop Computer?

1. Download and Install Satellite TV for PC Software

This is a piece of software that is downloaded and installed into computers to allow them to receive TV signals on the web. There are a lot of sites selling them, but you should only use the most reliable and reputable ones.

This method offers a huge number of channels for watching, over 3,000 in total, and that number is increasing as new ones are being added. This is perhaps the simplest and most popular way since it does not require you to handle any hardware equipment or cables. This software can be easily acquired from the internet, and the installation process is straight-forward too, and finishes in roughly 5 to 10 minutes. It is my preferred method and I have been enjoying watching cable TV with it for many months.

2. Install a PCTV Card

This is a hardware method that involves either connecting an external or internal PCTV card to your computer. Both the internal and external cards have their benefits and drawbacks. The external one is easier to setup for beginners. It only requires a USB connection, but it is going to take up space on your PC table. On the other hand, the internal card is attached inside your CPU, but will require more technical expertise to install correctly.

Digital TV can be received in four different ways, each with its own features and suppliers. The service that you are able to receive may depend on whereabouts you live.

Digital Cable TV is supplied by either Telewest or NTL depending on where you live in the country. You receive your digital TV through cables in the ground via a set top box. Cable companies also offer a host of competitive broadband and telephone packages alongside digital TV. It will usually be cheaper to buy a package comprising all three services than to obtain them individually from different service providers.

Digital Satellite TV is supplied by Sky Digital. Digital signals are sent and received by satellites meaning you need a mini-disc attached to your property in order to receive digital satellite TV via a digi-box. Sky Digital now offers free broadband to their customers. Sky is well known to be the UK’s main supplier of Premiership Football, indeed having exclusive rights in recent years to show live Premier League. Although this monopoly has now been broken, the vast majority of top flight football is still with Sky. Their top packages include 4 dedicated in-house sports channels plus their extensive movie suite, Sky Movies.

Normally, both cable and satellite television customers will have a similar choice of channels, grouped into packages, such as sport, films, news, music and education. It is therefore possible to tailor your channels to your tastes and therefore save money compared to ordering the full selection.

Cable and Satellite viewers tend also to have access to interactive services unlike terrestrial customers. This includes enhanced sports coverage where viewers may select their camera angle, or additional behind the scenes footage for their favourite soap opera or drama. Cable customers subscribing to Telewest can choose to watch selected television programmes on demand through the new Teleport service, with includes many past series of comedy, drama and documentaries, as well as programmes aired on the BBC over the past 7 days.

From a technical angle, both of these options (satellite and cable) will require a technician to come to your home for installation, although this is commonly carried out free of charge if you choose carefully when to order.

Free to Air Digital TV is received via your existing TV aerial and decoded using a set-top box or integrated digital TV. The most common form is Freeview. Your ability to receive free to air digital TV depends on where you live and the type of aerial you have. Existing aerials can be upgraded in order to receive the service if necessary. The Freeview service is a cut down version of Sky’s digital satellite selection, and Telewest and NTL’s cable choices, and is primarily made up of content supplied by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). At the time of writing, Freeview carries over 30 channels, covering news, politics, terrestrial channels (in digital quality), comedy, drama, films and sports news amongst others

Digital ASDL TV is received via a high speed internet connection through a standard telephone line. This service is strictly limited to trial areas for the time being. It is widely anticipated that this will become a commonplace method of viewing for a large section of the population in the future.

Imagine never having an argument over who controls the remote at home ever again? By using a personal digital recorder, life is made even easier in Australia by a software roll-out to progressively upgrade all iQ2 personal digital recorders (PDRs) to automatically activate Four Tuner functionality.

The Four Tuners allow iQ2 subscribers to record two programs while watching a third program live, at the same time. Only the iQ2 has the Four Tuner functionality making it the most advanced PDR currently available in Australia.

Recent research on PDRs, such as iQ and iQ2 units, shows these devices contribute to a more harmonious household for both families and couples, with a solid 75 percent of Australian homes with a PDR finding the technology indispensable. Of those homes using a PDR in Australia, 76 percent of families experience fewer arguments over what to watch, and 78 percent of couples say it has dramatically enhanced their relationship as each person can enjoy their own programs.

The latest High Definition iQ2 PDR is stylish with a liquid-black finish – it records programs onto its internal hard disk drive that can be easily played back using electronic program guides. You’ll never miss a moment because PDR’s fits cable TV into your schedule and not the other way around.

The Four Tuner functionality will be enabled automatically to every iQ2, meaning iQ2 subscribers will not be required to do anything to receive the new feature. As the automatic download will happen progressively all current and new iQ2 subscribers should be able to access the Four Tuner functionality by December 2008.

Features of the new style PDR’s also include:

1. The ability to pause and rewind live television, record two programs at the same time while watching a third live channel or watch a pre-recorded program as well as access to Series Link programs so they can record an entire season with a single button press.

2. Using an online guide through the internet or a 3G mobile phone to set up the remote record functionality to record user’s favourite programs when away from home.

3. Future-proofing by providing software updates to the PDR enabling subscribers to access the latest functionality and new technology over time.

4. A massive disk drive allowing subscribers to record approximately 30 hours of High Definition (HD) programming or 90 hours of standard definition programming (SD).

5. The capability to display High Definition images in either 720p or 1080i resolution, delivered to the PDR using advanced MPEG4 compression.
